Gold pendant on white shirt

The Monrich Team · 8 min read · 2026/11

That’s central Manchester. The exact spot where the Bridgewater Hall sits. To anyone reading those numbers cold, they’re meaningless. To the man who proposed in that spot in 2019 and wears the coordinates on a pendant under his shirt every day, they’re the most meaningful piece of metal he owns.

That’s the entire appeal of the coordinates pendant, and it’s why the category has gone from niche personalised gift to one of the top-selling men’s pendants in the UK in the last three years. The coordinates pendant is jewellery designed to look like a graphic to strangers and like a story to the wearer. It’s the opposite of a brand logo. The deeper the meaning, the more invisible the meaning is.

This is the UK guide for picking coordinates, choosing the engraving format, and getting the pendant right in 2026.

I run Monrich, a UK men’s jewellery brand offering coordinates pendant personalisation. Disclosure up front.

You can see the current personalised pendants line-up for reference as you read.

Section 01

What is a coordinates pendant?

Gold pendants collection in palm

A coordinates pendant is a piece of jewellery (pendant on a chain, sometimes a dog tag style, sometimes a bracelet or ring) engraved with GPS coordinates of a meaningful location.

Standard format: latitude / longitude in degrees, minutes, seconds (or in decimal degrees). The numbers form an alphanumeric pattern that has no inherent meaning to the casual observer but pinpoints an exact place on Earth for the wearer.

Example: “51.5074°N 0.1278°W” = the centre of London. Specific to ~1 metre precision.

The pendant becomes a wearable map: this piece of metal points to a specific place that matters to you.

Section 02

Why coordinates make great engravings

Universally meaningful but personally specific

Coordinates are a global language (anyone can decode them with a phone), but the place they reference is unique to your story. No two people pick the same coordinates for the same reasons.

Compact format

A full latitude / longitude fits on a small pendant face. Compare to a phrase or name which might run off the available space.

Doesn't age

Geographic places change less than people. The coordinates of London or your grandparents’ village or where you proposed don’t change. The engraving stays meaningful for decades.

Numerical, not language-specific

Coordinates work in any language. A French wearer or a UK wearer or a Japanese wearer can all read the same coordinates.

Distinctive

Most men’s pendants have names, initials, symbols, dates. Coordinates feel different. They signal “I thought about this specifically”.

Common places men engrave

Small engraved gold pendant men

The most common coordinate engravings on men’s pendants:

Where you grew up

The coordinates of your childhood home or hometown. A constant link to origin.

Where you proposed / got married

For married men. The location of the proposal or wedding ceremony.

Where a child was born

The hospital or birth location coordinates. Carried as a tribute / memory.

Family heritage location

Where parents or grandparents came from. Particularly meaningful for immigrants or for those distant from family origin.

Where someone passed

For memorial pieces. Where a parent / grandparent / loved one is buried or where a significant memorial event happened.

Where you met someone significant

The exact spot of a meaningful first meeting (a partner, mentor, lifelong friend).

Travel milestone

Coordinates of a place that changed your life through travel (the summit you reached, the city that inspired your career, the country you moved to).

Religious / spiritual significance

For believers: holy sites (Jerusalem, Mecca, Vatican, Bodh Gaya). For others: spiritual sites that hold personal meaning.

Section 04

Coordinate format options

Degrees, minutes, seconds (DMS)

Example: 51°31‘10”N 0°7‘40”W (Buckingham Palace)

The most “traditional” format. Each degree is divided into 60 minutes, each minute into 60 seconds. Precise to about 30 metres.

Decimal degrees (DD)

Example: 51.5014°N 0.1419°W

Cleaner numerical format. Easier to read. Precise to about 1 metre with 4 decimal places. The modern standard for GPS.

Compass notation

Use N/S for latitude and E/W for longitude. “51.5014°N 0.1419°W” or “51.5014 N, 0.1419 W”

Without compass notation

Just the numbers: “51.5014, -0.1419” (where positive = N/E, negative = S/W). More minimal aesthetic.

For UK men in 2026: decimal degrees with compass notation (51.5014°N 0.1419°W) is the most common format. Reads clearly and elegantly.

Pendant shapes for coordinates

Letter, rings and box, personal meaning

Dog tag (most common)

The flat rectangular dog tag is the most popular shape for coordinates. Plenty of surface area, the institutional look matches the precision of GPS coordinates.

Bar pendant

A horizontal rectangular bar with coordinates engraved across its length. Slim, modern, minimal.

Disc / circle pendant

Coordinates engraved in a curved arc around a circular pendant. More decorative, less institutional.

Cross pendant

Coordinates on a cross combines religious / sentimental meaning with the location significance. Less common but powerful.

ID bracelet style

A bar engraved with coordinates worn on the wrist instead of the neck. Visible to the wearer constantly.

For first coordinates pendant: dog tag style is the most popular and versatile.

How to choose your coordinates

Step 1: Pick the place

What place has the most meaning in your life right now? Don’t overthink it. Your gut answer is usually the right one.

Step 2: Find the coordinates

Easiest method: 1. Open Google Maps 2. Navigate to the place 3. Right-click on the exact spot 4. The coordinates appear in the menu (you can copy them)

Alternative: use a coordinates lookup site (gps-coordinates.net, latlong.net).

Step 3: Choose precision

For most pendants: 4 decimal places (e.g. 51.5074) gives ~10m precision. 5-6 decimal places gives ~1m precision.

For city / neighbourhood significance: 2-3 decimal places is enough. For specific building / room significance: 4-5 decimal places.

Step 4: Verify

Double-check the coordinates by plugging them back into Google Maps. Make sure they land on the right place.

Step 5: Choose format

Decimal degrees with compass notation is the modern standard. Choose what reads best to you.

FAQ

What format should I use for coordinates engraving?

Decimal degrees with compass notation (e.g. 51.5074°N 0.1278°W) is the modern standard. Reads clearly and is universally understood. Avoid degrees-minutes-seconds format unless you specifically want the more traditional look.

How precise should my coordinates be?

4 decimal places (e.g. 51.5074) gives 10 metre precision. 5-6 decimal places give 1 metre precision. For most pendants, 4 decimal places is enough and reads cleaner. For specific building / room precision, use 5-6.

Can I engrave coordinates on a small pendant?

Yes. Coordinates fit on most pendants larger than 20mm × 20mm. For smaller pendants, consider abbreviated coordinates (just the numbers, no compass notation) to save space.

Should I engrave the place name with the coordinates?

Optional. Some men engrave just numbers (more cryptic, secret meaning). Others engrave name + coordinates (“LONDON / 51.5074°N 0.1278°W”) for clarity. Personal choice.

Can I update coordinates if I move?

Once engraved, coordinates are permanent on that piece. If you want flexibility, choose coordinates of a place that won’t change in meaning to you. For temporary or evolving life situations, coordinates engraving may not be the best choice.

Are coordinates pendants in style?

Yes. Coordinates pendants are one of the strongest personalisation trends in men’s jewellery in 2025-2026. Not a fleeting trend, the meaningful nature of the engraving gives the piece lasting value.
