Engraving & Personalisation FAQ Men UK 2026

Category Faq

The engraving on a £40 men's signet ring lasts longer than the plating.

Engraved monogram

The Monrich Team · 8 min read · 2026/05

That’s a useful frame for thinking about engraving choices. A PVD-plated 316L signet’s plating typically wears in 3-5 years. Laser engraving on the same piece typically lasts 7-15+ years, longer than the cosmetic finish. The engraving is the permanent element; the plating is the temporary element.

This is the consolidated FAQ for men’s jewellery engraving and personalisation in UK 2026. 25 questions, direct answers.

I run Monrich, a UK men’s jewellery brand offering free laser engraving. Disclosure first.

Section 01

Engraving methods

Ring close-up

Most UK buyers think there are two engraving methods: machine and hand. There are actually four meaningfully different methods, and the differences matter for both cost and longevity.

The method you choose determines whether your engraving lasts a decade or stays crisp for a lifetime. For pieces with deep personal meaning (coordinates of your child’s birthplace, dates of significant moments, family crests), the method choice is one of the most consequential decisions of the entire purchase.

What's the difference between laser and hand engraving?

Laser engraving: a laser removes microscopic layers of metal in precise patterns. Fast (5-30 minutes per piece), accurate, low cost (£0-£40), and produces consistent results. Standard for plated and stainless steel pieces in 2026.

Hand engraving: a master engraver uses chisels and burins to cut designs into the metal by hand. Slow (1-10 hours per piece), expensive (£100-£500+), and produces unique character. Standard for premium solid gold pieces.

For most UK men’s jewellery in 2026, laser engraving is the standard. Hand engraving is reserved for heirloom solid gold pieces and specialist heraldic work.

Is laser engraving as good as hand engraving?

Different rather than ranked. Laser engraving is more precise and consistent. Hand engraving has visible chisel marks and individual character. For modern minimalist designs (initials, monograms, coordinates), laser is the natural fit. For traditional heraldic crests and family pieces, hand engraving has more heritage feel.

Can engravings be done deeper or shallower?

Yes for both methods. Deeper engravings last longer and are more visible. Shallower engravings have a more subtle appearance. For laser engraving on PVD-plated 316L: 0.1-0.3mm depth is standard. For hand engraving on solid gold: 0.3-0.8mm depth is typical.

Is rotary engraving used in jewellery?

Yes, less commonly. Rotary engraving uses a spinning diamond bit to cut into metal. Slower than laser, more expensive, but produces deeper engravings. Common for harder metals (titanium) and for some specialist applications. Less popular than laser for standard jewellery engraving.

Section 02

What to engrave

Cross detail

The “what to engrave” decision is functionally permanent.

Once the laser fires or the engraver’s chisel cuts, the design is set. You cannot change your mind in three months. You cannot revise the wording in five years. The piece carries that specific engraving for its full lifespan, whether that’s 10 years (plated) or 50+ years (solid gold). Most men think about engraving choice for 5-10 minutes before committing; the smarter approach is 5-10 days.

What are the most popular engraving choices for men?

UK 2026 men’s engraving preferences: 1. Single initial (40% of personalised pieces) 2. Two-letter monogram (20%) 3. Three-letter monogram (15%) 4. Coordinates of meaningful place (8%) 5. Date (memorial, birth, anniversary) (8%) 6. Single word (name, nickname, motto) (5%) 7. Family crest (documented) (3%) 8. Custom symbol or logo (1%)

Should I engrave my full name or initials?

Initials for most pieces. Full names take up more engraving space, can read awkward on small pieces (rings, ID bracelets), and are less elegant than monograms. Initials work cleanly on signet rings, dog tags, and ID bracelets.

What coordinates should I engrave?

Most popular for men: place where you proposed, place where children were born, place of marriage, hometown, place of significant achievement. Use GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude) in standard format: 51.5074° N, 0.1278° W for London, for example.

Should I engrave dates as DD/MM/YYYY or numbers only?

Standard UK format DD/MM/YYYY (e.g., 15.06.1987 or 15/06/1987). Some men prefer numbers only (15061987) for minimalist look. Both work; pick based on aesthetic preference.

Section 03

Font choices

Personalised lifestyle

What's the best font for men's signet ring engraving?

UK 2026 popular signet engraving fonts: 1. Old English / Blackletter (gothic, traditional) 2. Times New Roman / serif (classic) 3. Sans-serif modern (clean) 4. Script / cursive (elegant)

For a versatile signet, serif or sans-serif is the safest pick. Blackletter reads more strongly heritage. Script reads more strongly traditional.

Should I use the same font as my partner's engraved ring?

Optional. Matching fonts read as intentional matched set (common for couples’ rings). Different fonts read as personal style without rules. Both approaches work.

What font for an ID bracelet?

For ID plates, slightly bolder fonts work better because the engraving needs to read clearly from across a room. Sans-serif modern fonts (Arial, Helvetica style) work well. Avoid overly decorative script on ID bracelets.

Can I see a preview before engraving?

Most UK brands offering engraving show a digital preview during the order process. Monrich provides preview images for laser engraving choices. Always confirm the preview before committing; engraving cannot be reversed.

The piece that looks the part on day one and the piece that holds up at month six are rarely the same piece.
Section 04

Durability and lifespan

How long does engraving last?

Laser engraving on PVD-plated 316L: 7-15+ years of regular wear. Laser engraving on sterling silver: 5-10 years. Laser engraving on solid gold: 10-25+ years. Hand engraving on solid gold: indefinite lifespan (the metal is physically removed; the depth persists for centuries).

Will engraving wear off?

Engraving wears slowly through accumulated friction at high-contact points. Laser engraving on a signet ring’s flat top will gradually become less crisp over years. Hand engraving on solid gold lasts indefinitely without becoming less crisp.

Does engraving affect the value of the piece?

For solid gold: hand engraving can add value to the piece (especially custom crests and heritage engraving). Laser engraving doesn’t significantly add value. For plated pieces: engraving is decorative and doesn’t affect resale value.

Can engraving be removed?

Mostly no. Engraving is physical metal removal. Once removed metal is gone, restoration requires re-plating or re-finishing the piece. For laser engraving on PVD: re-plating can sometimes mask shallow engraving. For deep engraving: removal is essentially impossible.

From section 04

Standard signet engraving area: 12-18mm wide × 8-12mm tall.

Section 05

Sizing and placement

How big is the engraving area on a signet ring?

Standard signet engraving area: 12-18mm wide × 8-12mm tall. Accommodates: - Single initial: comfortable - Two-letter monogram: tight but workable - Three-letter monogram: requires careful font choice - Custom design: depends on detail level

How big is the engraving area on an ID bracelet?

Standard ID plate engraving area: 30-50mm × 10-15mm. Accommodates: - Name (up to 12 characters comfortably) - Coordinates - Date - Short message (up to 20 characters) - Multi-line engraving possible on larger plates

Can I engrave on the inside of a ring?

Yes, very common for solid gold rings. Inside engraving is subtle, visible only to the wearer. Common choices: date, partner’s initials, short message. Avoid for thin band rings (insufficient surface area).

Where can I engrave on a chain or bracelet?

For chain bracelets: typically at the clasp or on an attached ID plate. For necklaces: typically on the pendant or attached dog tag. Direct engraving on chain links is technically possible but visually small and not common.

Section 06

Materials and engraving

Which materials engrave best?

Best engraving results: solid gold (any karat), titanium, sterling silver. The metal cuts cleanly and the engraving is crisp.

Good engraving results: 316L stainless steel, PVD-plated 316L. The base metal engraves cleanly under the plating.

Limited engraving results: hardened titanium (alloyed for industrial use), tungsten carbide (too hard for laser).

Can PVD-plated pieces be engraved without affecting the plating?

Yes if done properly. Laser engraving on PVD-plated pieces removes the plating and underlying metal in the engraved areas, exposing the base 316L. The engraving lines appear in a slightly different colour (darker against the gold plating). This is standard and intentional.

Will engraving change after the plating wears off?

The engraving stays the same depth and shape. Visible difference: when the plating around the engraving wears, the engraved lines become less contrasted against the surrounding base metal. The engraving is still readable but visually less crisp.

Are some materials too soft to engrave?

24K pure gold is very soft and produces shallow engraving. 9K solid gold has more alloy and engraves more cleanly. For laser engraving on softer metals, deeper engraving compensates for the softness.

Section 07
